Around 1890 a generation of Danish architects stopped borrowing finished European styles. They went to work in their own country instead: the medieval churches, the Renaissance manor houses, the farm buildings, Nordic timber construction, local craft, brick, granite, timber. Martin Nyrop, Hans J. Holm and later P.V. Jensen-Klint looked for the principles behind Nordic building culture — not its motifs.

That distinction is the whole basis of our work. Nyrop did not copy a medieval church. He understood why it had been built the way it was, and built on from there. We do the same with his generation's work.

With today's means.

We do not build reconstructions. Structure, insulation, services, daylight and plan follow how buildings are made today — and how people live today. What we take from National Romanticism is the attitude: that a house should answer the place it stands in; that material is chosen specifically, not as a category; and that the junctions between the parts are the architecture itself.

That, we believe, is what makes Danish architecture its own — and it is worth continuing.
